When Constraints Fuel Strength
During my consulting days in New York, I was walking to a client meeting with two colleagues — one Indian-American and the other Jewish.
A Candid Question and a Surprising History
The Indian-American colleague asked, “Why do you think so many consultants, lawyers, and bankers are Jewish?”
The Jewish colleague responded with a question, “What’s your guess?”
With a smile, the Indian-American said, “Maybe it’s because Jews love money.”
The Jewish colleague laughed but replied, “That sounds like a stereotype!” Then he shared a deeper truth.

Turning Barriers Into Opportunities
Historically, Jews were often barred from owning property and excluded from many traditional industries. Unable to work in the all-white banks, they started their own — firms like Goldman Sachs and Lehman Brothers.
What was intended to hold the Jewish community back actually pushed them to excel in new fields, leading to their dominance in finance, trade, and media in the US.
The Power of the Human Spirit
This story doesn’t diminish the real struggles against discrimination based on race, religion, or gender — those battles must continue fiercely.
But sometimes, adversity reveals resilience and innovation that wouldn’t have surfaced otherwise.
In the end, no amount of land, capital, or resources can match the strength of the human spirit.
